As the largest and most inclusive interfaith public interest group in Minnesota, JRLC works to influence state policy for the common good. JRLC’s annual Day on the Hill brings together Jewish, Christian, and Muslim clergy and lay people from across Minnesota for issue briefings and legislative advocacy.
Joint Religious Legislative Coalition Minnesota Legislative agenda
Have you ever considered the story of Moses and our journey of legislative advocacy?
Moses story is the story of many who have significant barriers and those who are called to speak for a struggling people. He was born into chaos and danger. He lived in the household of those oppressing his people. He was called by God to address this oppression and seek freedom for God’s people. He wasn’t so excited to do this work! This story is the story of many people whose needs are not being met and whose stories are not being told. There are many reasons we can use to “excuse” ourselves from this work, but…
Pope Francis said that politics “is one of the highest forms of charity, because it serves the common good in humility and love.” Jesus tells us clearly we are to Love God and Love our neighbor as ourselves. We are compelled to participation by Catholic Social Teaching, but our hearts are what lead us to advocate for justice with mercy and compassion for those who are most in need and most vulnerable. Political participation through legislative advocacy is the on-going, long-term call to dialogue with our elected officials about pressing needs of people who may have no voice – “widows, orphans, and aliens”. Subsidiarity, working at the most local level to solve peoples’ problems and serve their needs, is where we start in addressing the common good of our society.
Joint Religious Legislative Coalition is a Minnesota advocacy organization of people from Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Catholic traditions. Each year, certain legislative issues are agreed upon by these faith traditions here in Minnesota, and legislative goals are set to meet the needs of people with justice and compassion. These are practical, achievable goals for which we, citizens and constituents of elected legislators, are asked to advocate. These are goals which promise to make a real and lasting positive impact on poor and vulnerable persons and families.
This year there are 5 issues. Some of these have been needs for 30 years, and some are more recent questions of justice. The issues relate to child-care, MFIP, Pay Day Lending practices, restore the vote, and human trafficking.
We will look at each issue over the next few weeks and suggest ways for you to be a voice for justice to your legislator around these issues.
Joint Religious Legislative Coalition (JRLC) is the largest and most inclusive interfaith public interest group in Minnesota — people of diverse faiths bringing vision and wisdom to the public realm for the well-being of Minnesotans.
