In the Community
Homebound Ministry
Our gifts of bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus and we are sent into the world to wash feet and proclaim the Mystery of Love in all the circumstances of life. The friends at the Last Supper were sinners and Jesus loved them and sent them forth. We are no different, nourished by His Body and Blood and called to announce His presence. This ministry works to bring the Eucharist and community to those in care centers or who are homebound.
Meal Ministry
Life brings many ups and downs. Meal Ministry works to provide meals to parishioners to provide assistance in a variety of circumstances such as families welcoming a new baby, a parishioner recovering from a surgery or with a medical need, families recovering from a tragedy, or even when a family is going through a tough time.
Channel One
Channel One Regional Food Bank serves people experiencing hunger in 14 counties in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Channel One is a great opportunity to get involved while getting to know other parishioners. The Co-Cathedral of St. John’s has partnered to create large group volunteer opportunities. We are happy to offer the opportunity to serve and grow in community.
Sunday Lunch Program
Ministry of the Rochester Catholic Parishes
Sunday Lunch is provided by the combined efforts of all Rochester Catholic Parishes. It is prepared and served each Sunday at St. Francis of Assisi in McCarthy Hall (corner of 4th St & 11th Ave. SE).
The Co-Cathedral of St. John’s, as a partner in this ministry, has a group of volunteers who work together to provide a meal for guests in need.
The only training we require is the VIRTUS training for adult church volunteers. This is done through the Co-Cathedral or another Catholic church in Rochester, depending on your schedule and the available training sessions. You may already be trained in VIRTUS.
Your family is welcome to participate with you. Volunteers meet at St. Francis on the day that we are serving around 9:30am. You will be directed how to help with the pre-planned meal. We prepare, serve and clean up and are done by 1:00pm.
We usually need about 6-8 volunteers and families are welcome to serve together! Please let Mary know if you would like to come and see or if you have other questions. We will find a date when the Co-Cathedral of St. John’s is serving and get you started. It is not necessary to be available for every time the Co-Cathedral of St. John’s serves.
Jeremiah Program
The mission of Jeremiah Program is to disrupt the cycle of poverty two generations at a time. This program serves single mothers to help them meet both their needs and the needs of their children. Throughout the year, the Co-Cathedral offers and cooks a meal for those in the program. You can get involved by contacting the Parish Center or by watching the calendar for upcoming service dates and needs.
Family Promise
FAMILY PROMISE ROCHESTER (formerly referred to as Interfaith Hospitality Network) provides a supportive environment for families experiencing a housing crisis.
The new Family Promise location – North Star House – is located at 913 1st Street NW. We can shelter up to five families, or about 18 people, at one time. Families can access shelter for 30-90 days, receive case management services, and access the necessary resources to secure permanent housing.
